What Is Work Equipment?

Work equipment includes all tools, machinery and equipment used to carry out a task.

Who May Perform Periodic Inspections?

Persons registered in EKİPNET through the e-Government system who have completed the training for authorised periodic inspectors may perform inspections. Those who make false declarations or issue incorrect reports may have their registration suspended for a specified period.

Which Work Equipment Requires Periodic Inspection?

The amendment published on 18 February 2022 groups equipment broadly into lifting and conveying equipment, pressure vessels, electrical installations, fire suppression systems, ventilation and air-conditioning systems, machine tools, industrial racking and doors, and construction machinery.

The following definitions and examples provide an overview:

Lifting Equipment: Equipment that moves a load or person horizontally or vertically by raising them at least 10 cm above the ground. Examples include cranes, tower cranes, forklifts, platforms and pallet trucks.

Pressure Vessels: Vessels operating at pressures of 0.5 bar or above are described as pressure vessels. Examples include air receivers and compressors, steam boilers, buffer vessels, booster vessels and calorifiers. The inspection category also includes atmospheric storage tanks, assessed under separate API and EN standard arrangements.

Electrical Installations: Inspection primarily establishes the conformity of the internal electrical installation. It includes earthing measurements, electrical panel checks, cathodic protection, generators, transformers and batteries. Lightning protection and machinery frames or enclosures must also be inspected.

Fire Suppression Systems: Fire protection may be needed infrequently, but it must meet national and international standards and operate effectively when required. At least annual inspection is needed for fire detection, engine-driven pumps and other pumps, hose cabinets and hoses, automatic gaseous suppression, kitchen-hood suppression, sprinklers, portable extinguishers, escape-route pressurisation, smoke extraction, pipework and all other system components.

Ventilation and Air-Conditioning Installations: Ventilation and air-conditioning installations in occupied spaces must be inspected at least once a year. Checks establish whether construction and operation comply with the design. A system designed for an office building, for example, may be unsuitable if that building becomes a hospital. Air velocity, air-change rates and other criteria depend on the intended use. In food facilities and hospitals, inspection must address hygiene requirements, and the installation should also help prevent occupational disease.

Machine Tools and Presses: The regulation sets an inspection interval of at least once a year for machine tools, without an exhaustive definition of the category. Examples include milling machines, lathes, CNC machining centres, metal-cutting and bending machines, cold-metal saws, stationary grinders and band saws. Presses of different types and capacities are used for punching, bending, forming and cutting. They may be mechanically or hydraulically powered, and their frames may be C-type, column or H-type. These machines present significant risks of limb injury.

Industrial Racking and Doors

Inspection of industrial racking and doors became mandatory under the amendment published on 18 February 2022. Industrial racking assessed against TS EN 15635 comprises steel structures used to increase storage capacity. Industrial doors include the different types of door used for the passage of industrial vehicles.

Construction Machinery

Inspection of construction machinery became mandatory under the amendment published on 18 February 2022. Examples include drilling rigs, tractor dozers, graders, dragline excavators and loaders.
