Escalators and moving walkways are continuous transport systems that carry users along a defined path. Escalators move people between floors. Their operating heights, speeds and angles are subject to limits set by the relevant standards.
Escalators and moving walkways must be selected with regard to factors such as passenger load, rise and operating speed. Moving walkways are generally preferred where trolleys, pushchairs, wheelchairs and similar items need to be transported. In shopping centres and comparable facilities, they often connect car parks to ground level or lift landings. This brings more users to lift level and distributes passenger demand across the areas served by escalators and lifts.
Escalators and moving walkways serve similar purposes but differ in several respects. Escalators have steps, while moving walkways have a continuous moving surface. The height differences between escalator steps create additional risks during transport, so escalators are fitted with additional safety measures.
The authorised service provider must be present during periodic inspections of escalators and moving walkways and perform the tests under the supervision of the inspection body.
Periodic inspections of escalators and moving walkways are performed by mechanical engineers, mechatronics engineers, technical teachers with mechanical or metalwork qualifications, or mechanical technicians and higher mechanical technicians registered in the EKİPNET system.
The Regulation on Health and Safety Requirements for the Use of Work Equipment requires escalators and moving walkways to be inspected at least once a year. The inspection interval should be determined systematically, taking account of operating conditions, the manufacturer's recommendations, risk assessment findings, near misses and other relevant factors.
From 31 December 2023, periodic inspections of escalators are required to be performed by inspection bodies accredited by TÜRKAK. Before the date specified in the regulation, accreditation was not mandatory for these inspection bodies.
Periodic inspections of escalators and moving walkways comprise checks against the relevant standard, checks of positioning and installation, and functional tests. Under their standard, the load tests referred to in the regulation are not performed. Contact FQC Standard customer services to set your processes on a prompt and effective course.
